What it is
AARP’s BankSafe initiative is a trusted program that helps credit union and bank employees fight against the financial exploitation of their members. In addition to comprehensive frontline training, BankSafe provides resources and research to help financial institutions spot fraud before it happens. Harborstone is the only credit union in Washington state that has earned the BankSafe Trained Seal.
Why it matters
One in five older Americans—thousands each day—are victims of financial exploitation. Each victim loses, on average, more than $120,000, totaling $3 billion lost annually to financial exploitation.
Financial institutions can help safeguard older Americans by training their staff, educating their customers, and adopting practices to fight against financial exploitation.
How it works
Credit unions can apply to have AARP verify that at least 80% of their frontline staff successfully passed the BankSafe training. With that verification, the credit union receives a “seal,” good for one year, recognizing the credit union’s commitment to fighting exploitation.
We’ve got you!
As a BankSafe Trained Seal holder, Harborstone’s staff is specially trained and tuned in to potential fraud. Team members at our branches, online, and in our contact center are trained and prepared to identify suspicious activity and respond swiftly when a member is targeted.
Equipping credit union employees with tools and education to fight exploitation is essential, and the BankSafe training program adds one more weapon to the Harborstone team line of defense.
